Modern and Contemporary Art Chelsea Wall #1 1999 Sean Scully, American (born Ireland), born 1945 Oil on canvas * Gallery 176, Modern and Contemporary Art, first floor (Alter Gallery) 2010-164-1a,b Gift of John J. Hannan, 2010 |
LabelChelsea Wall #1 was the first major work that Sean Scully completed in his studio on West 17th Street, in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. The painting both captures the spirit of the postindustrial urban landscape and relates specifically to local architecture. Scully has referred to it as seemingly “full of light and air”—a description evocative of the nearby Hudson River piers and equally apt to the composition’s distinctively flag-like, multicolored bands.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
